Herbert Maruwa has officially turned on the WiFi!
Just over a year after taking charge of TelOne when they were languishing mid-table, the former Dynamos and Black Rhinos gaffer has transformed the Gweru-based side into a serious Premier Soccer League contender.
It’s been a footballing glow-up of note. TelOne, affectionately known as the WiFi Boys, now sit pretty in fourth place on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League standings with 25 points.
They’re just seven points behind log leaders MWOS and looking hungrier by the week.
“It’s all about believing in yourself,” said a modest but proud Maruwa. “When I came here, the team was not in a good position. We were 11th on the log, but we worked together as a family and survived relegation. Recruitment has been key, and now the results are coming.”
Maruwa, who took over in May last year, says this is only the beginning of something bigger. “It takes two to three years to build a competitive team.
“What we are doing now is good, but trust me, we’re not done.”
The WiFi Boys are buzzing, and so is their frontline. At the heart of their attacking resurgence is striker Washington Navaya, a man reborn after being dumped by Highlanders two seasons ago.
Navaya grabbed his 10th goal of the season in a midweek 1-1 draw against ZPC Kariba and his coach can’t stop singing his praises.
“He’s a senior player, he’s been at the highest level. He works hard, stays focused, and delivers when it counts,” said Maruwa.
With TelOne finally connected and charging toward the top, fans across Gweru are starting to believe. The WiFi signal is strong and it’s only getting better.
