MARVELOUS Nakamba will lead the Warriors in their Unity Cup showdown against Nigeria at the Valley in London tonight.
What is not questionable is that Nakamba is clubless right now.
What is debatable is the way he became clubless.
Most of the reports online claim that the Zimbabwe skipper was released by Sheffield Wednesday after their relegation from the English Championship.
The reports are mainly linked to the list of players which the Owls retained for the forthcoming season.
That list does not feature Nakamba’s name.
But, expecting Nakamba to have been part of the list of retained players was wrong because the Warriors skipper’s contract ended on the final day of the season.
He could not be retained because he was no longer part of the contracted players at the Owls.
“For Marve to be retained, it meant that he had to sign another contract with Wednesday,” said a local agent. “His contract was short-term, it was until the end of the season, it was for six months, you can say that, and when the season ended it ended.
“You don’t be retained simply because you played for the team in the past season. You have to have a contract with that team first and Marve needed to negotiate another deal with Wednesday and whether it was going to succeed or fail is another thing.”
What did the Owls say when they signed him?
“The Owls have signed Zimbabwe international Marvelous Nakamba on a free transfer,” read their statement.
“The experienced defensive midfielder joins Wednesday for the remainder of the current campaign.”
The agent added: “Marve did not get a lot of game time at Wednesday and there was always going to be this likelihood that their relationship would end at the end of the season. But, you can’t expect someone whose contract has expired to be part of the names of those who would have been retained for the following season.”
