AS the Castle Lager Premiership season nears its end, Simba Bhora defender Webster Tafa has stood tall, spearheading a revolution that is putting Mashonaland Central on the football map.
The Shamva side are calling the shots after taking a six-point lead ahead of second-placed FC Platinum, who are on 54 points with four games to play. This unassuming hero from Bindura has made it his mission to elevate the province’s football stature, and his remarkable season is a testament to his unwavering dedication.
Tafa’s impressive statistics tell only part of the story. He has played every minute of the campaign, a staggering 30 league games, and two Chibuku Cup matches, without receiving a single yellow or red card.
Tafa has also registered two assists, expertly crafted through balls to teammate, Tymon Machope.
But, his true impact extends far beyond numbers.
He appears to be the standard bearer for Mashonaland Central’s football resurgence, inspiring a new generation of players from the region.
His leadership from the back has transformed Simba Bhora into a formidable force, and enhanced the province’s pride, as a maiden Castle Lager Premiership title beckons.
Previously, he was instrumental in Mushowani Stars’ 2018 ZIFA Northern Region Division One Soccer League triumph and replicated this feat with Simba Bhora three seasons ago. Now, he is on the cusp of securing the Castle Lager Premiership.
The 29-year-old defender has been battling silently, often overshadowed by the team’s flashy players like Walter Musona, Mthokozisi Msebe, and Machope, who have been scoring goals for the club.
Simba Bhora are also in contention for a slot in the finals of the Chibuku Super Cup, as they are scheduled to meet Ngezi Platinum Stars in the semi-finals at Baobab tomorrow.
Tafa told Zimpapers Sports Hub that his quest for glory is not just about personal achievement, but about elevating his community and the province.
“I’m driven by the desire to put Mashonaland Central on the map. We’ve worked tirelessly to prove ourselves, and this season is our chance to make history,” said Tafa.
“We’ve come too far to let our lead slip. We’ll fight until the end for Mashonaland Central, for Simba Bhora, our people, and our coach (Tonderai Ndiraya).
“We have never been in this position before but we have a lot of players who know how close we are and they have been motivating some of us to keep our eyes on the ball.”
