Mash East marks National AIDS Day with call to end stigma

MASHONALAND East Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Advocate Itayi Ndudzo has challenged Zimbabweans not to stigmatise people living with HIV.

Adv Ndudzo made the call in his address at the Mashonaland East Provincial National Aids Day commemorations held in Seke district today.

The commemorations were held under the theme, “Overcoming Disruptions, Transforming the AIDS Response”.

“HIV elimination requires integrated, people-centred services. Our health system must respond to non-communicable diseases, mental health, Tuberculosis, sexual and reproductive health, and drug misuse through one coordinated entry point—ending missed opportunities and repeated delays,” he said

“We must also fight stigma, the last barrier to ending HIV. Stigma brings silence, fear, and delayed care. Zimbabwe is strongest when no one is left behind. Today, we choose love that drives out fear.

“We are grateful for biomedical advances such as PrEP, PEP, and Lenacapavir, and for improved infrastructure under the Second Republic.

“Through devolution, we see progress here in Seke District, including Bwoni Clinic and Whiladale Clinic. More clinics mean equipment and medicine reach every community because care should not depend on distance or luck.”

Advocate Ndudzo warned that when diseases are unattended, the effects are not only medical, but they are also economic and social.

“Untreated illness diverts resources meant for development, families lose income, caregivers are overburdened, children miss learning, and the health system faces avoidable emergencies,” he said.

“But when we test early, treat promptly, and support adherence, we protect productivity, protect learning, and protect the future workforce of this nation.

“Let this gathering be a turning point. No one will be pushed out of care by fear, stigma will no longer silence diagnosis, and disruptions will refine hope into resilience. I therefore challenge the relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to strengthen quality, efficiency, and access, and to mobilise aid and support for our people.”

Adv Ndudzo also commended and encouraged all stakeholders to do more through multi-pronged interventions that help in combating outbreaks.

“May God bless our health workers, strengthen our communities, and keep our people safe. To those living with HIV, your future is not cancelled,” he said.

“Your life is not wasted. You are part of Mashonaland East’s strength and Zimbabwe’s strength.”
