Mash swimmers maintain dominance

MASHONALAND maintained their stranglehold at the ongoing Zimbabwe Senior Swimming Championships at the Bulawayo City Pool.

The national senior swimming tourney started on Thursday with Mashonaland dominating almost every event of the championships. The five-day tournament ends tomorrow, with the curtains for the national senior swimming season also coming down.

By yesterday Mashonaland had bagged five gold medals, four silver, two bronze, while second placed Matabeleland had two gold, three silver and three bronze.

Participating at the championships are Masvingo, Matabeleland, Mashonaland, Mashonaland Country Districts, Midlands and Manicaland.

Usually the championships are held at the imposing Les Brown Pool in Harare, but Bulawayo was given the thumbs up to host this year’s edition thanks to a world class pool courtesy of last year’s African Union Sports Council Region 5 under-20 Youth Games held in the city.

With 155 swimmers participating at this year’s championships, Mashonaland has the biggest number, the same pattern that has obtained over the years.

Out of the eight swimmers who took part in the girls’ 13-14, 200 metre race, only one swimmer, Savannah Du Prez, was representing Matabeleland while seven other competitors were from Mashonaland.

Mashonaland Country District, Manicaland and Masvingo have the least number of swimmers in this year’s edition. Most races were pitting Mashonaland and Matabeleland swimmers.
