President Mnangagwa has promoted decorated military commander, Major-General Grey Mashava, to lead Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s office.
VP Chiwenga is also the Minister of Health and Child Care.
Maj-Gen Mashava is a veteran of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and excelled in the academic field, with qualifications in law and international relations, among others.
Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda, announced last night that the President had approved Maj-Gen Mashava’s new role.
“The Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet is pleased to announce that His Excellency the President has approved the promotion of Major-General G Mashava to the post of Chief of Staff and Head of Office in Honourable Vice President Gen (Rtd) CDGN Chiwenga’s Office,” reads part of the statement.
“Major-General G Mashava, an ex-combatant, distinguished himself both during the liberation struggle and subsequently as a multi-talented officer in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, rendering distinguished service in the Mozambican campaign, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and as a Military Observer in Angola as a member of the United Nations Military Observer Mission (UNAVEM) in 1992.”
He holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations and Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Zimbabwe.
Dr Sibanda said Maj-Gen Mashava served in various capacities in the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
His credentials as a lawyer saw him at one time multi-task as Director Legal Services in the ZDF and as Legal Adviser, Office of the President and Cabinet.
Earlier on, he had been seconded to the Attorney-General’s Office as a Chief Law Officer. His appointment as a Senior Personal Officer in the Office of the Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces was part of the natural career progression of an officer who served with distinction, as was his subsequent elevation to Senior Principal Director in 2018.
Added Dr Sibanda: “The post of Chief of Staff reflects the role and weight of a pivotal leadership position that derives its importance from its location in the Office of the Vice President.
“It reflects the critical control and coordination which the incumbent will discharge in orchestrating the myriad of engagements that characterize the Office of the Vice President.
“Given the heavy demand on the Vice President’s time both on formal and informal levels, intelligent, content-sensitive and firm gate keeping and prioritisation will be an important function of the Chief of Staff and Head of Office in the Vice President’s Office.”
Dr Sibanda said Maj-Gen Mashava’s appointment is with effect from December 1.
