MASHONALAND Central Province and Mozambique’s Tete Province have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding to enhance economic, cultural and historic ties between the two neighbouring provinces. The MoU was signed by Mashonaland Central Provincial Affairs Minister Advocate Martin Dinha and his Tete counterpart Cde Paulo Auade in Bindura last Thursday.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Cde Auade described the signing of the MOU as the beginning of a long journey to enhance economic co-operation between the two bordering provinces.
“We share the same border, culture and history and this should be transformed into economic benefits for our people. The two provinces are endowed with rich natural resources which should be tapped and shared for the betterment of our economies,” he said.
Cde Auade added: “We should not wait for foreigners to come and lead us in tapping our resources. We should be our own economic liberators and if we co-operate and work together we should develop our countries’ economies.”
Speaking at the same occasion, Adv Dinha said the MOU cements the relationship between Zimbabwe and Mozambique that dates back to the days of the liberation struggle.
“Zimbabwe is a child of Mozambique as the neighbouring country sacrificed its economic and human resources during our war of liberation. Mozambique suffered the brunt of the colonial machinery and scars are everywhere to see, be it in Tete, Tembwe, Nyadzonia and Chimoio where thousands of people from both countries were massacred by the colonial regime,” he said.
He added: “We cannot wish away that friendship between our two countries. We are one people with one common history and heritage. However, history and family ties cannot develop our economies. The MOU we have signed today becomes the foundation of great economic things to come. We are excited by the investment opportunities availed to our businesspeople in Tete Province and we should fully utilise these opportunities.”
Tete Province has since invited their counterparts from Mashonaland Central Province for a week-long capacity building training programme.
