At least 65 mushika-shika including kombis were arrested and impounded by the police in Marondera, as the law enforcement agents intensify operations to stop illegal public transporters in Mashonaland East Province.
In Marondera town, most mushika-shika vehicles give service to those travelling from the high-density areas to the Central Business District and vise versa. Others operate from 10 Miles Business Centre along Wedza Marondera Road, either going to Wedza or Marondera.
One of the common vehicles used for mushika-shika is a Honda Fit, where under normal circumstances, is supposed to carry only four passengers, but now it is normal to see the five-door vehicle loaded with eight passengers excluding the driver.
This, coupled with them being banned to operate under the Covid-19 lockdown regulations has prompted the police in Mashonaland East province this week to launch a blitz aimed at removing them from the roads.
Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East Province Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi said the blitz is an ongoing operation and is already spreading across the province.
“All kombis wishing to operate should do so under ZUPCO. We have seen that these illegal operators are flouting Covid-19 regulations. They do not sanitise their vehicles and their passengers.
“This operation is being carried across the province, until all those operating illegally are stopped.”
