Mashonaland girls set relay record

The team of Gemma Schonken, Megan Kadzirange, Amu Valela and Nomvula Mjimba stopped the clock in 1 minute 26.16s to eclipse the standing record of 1.27.27 min.
There was also an impressive performance from Under-10 swimmer Hollie Stander as she finished as the most outstanding female swimmer in the individual categories in her age group.
Pirates swimmer Stander finished with 40 points to be ranked first in the individuals while compatriot Bruce Chiang led the Under-10 boys with 48 points.
Denilson Cypranos of Matabeleland and Nomvula Mjimba from Mashonaland clinched first position in the nine-year-old boys and girls section respectively.
In the eight-and-under boys, Mashonaland’s Bryan Chiang finished on top of the rankings with 30 points while Mashonaland Districts’ Paige Van Der Westhuizen managed 34 points to take first position in the girls’ rankings.
Mashonaland finished the two-day championship with a massive 1 119 points to retain their title while Matabeleland came a distant second after amassing 663 points. In third place was Mashonaland Country Districts who reached 397 points.
Midlands managed 31 points to settle for fourth place while Manicaland were fifth with 11 points.
The competition was for swimmers between the ages of eight and 11 with participants taking part in 30m, 54m and 120m in backstrokes, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, individual medley, medley relay and freestyle relay.
Zimbabwe Aquatic Union president Marry Kloppers said she was impressed with the level of competition.
“The competition was very good. We certainly have good up and           coming swimmers like Hollie  Stander.
“We had a very good final competition of the season for the juniors.
“The organisation was extremely well and I was impressed,” said Kloppers.
