HOW time flies.

This month marks 10 years since United States-based Zimbabwean Julius Mashonganyika became the most decorated tennis coach from this country.

In January 2016, the United States Professional Tennis Association certified Mashonganyika as a coaching tennis  specialist.

The USPTA operates under the United States Tennis Association, the country’s tennis motherbody.

Becoming a USPTA Coaching Tennis Specialist means you are a trusted, trained, and nationally recognised coach who develops players the right way—ethically, progressively, and with long-term success in mind.

A USTA (or USPTA) coaching specialist is also a coach who has been formally trained, evaluated, and recognised by the United States Tennis Association for their ability to develop players effectively, safely, and ethically, especially within the American Development Model.

Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub from his base in Loudoun County, Virginia, yesterday ahead of next month’s Black History Month in the United States, Mashonganyika said he feels extremely proud and really honoured to be now regarded as one of the most qualified Black coaches in the US and Zimbabwe.

Black History Month is an annually observed commemorative month originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month.

It began as a way of remembering important people and events in African-American history, before it spread to other countries where it could celebrate Black people worldwide.

And Mashonganyika said being rated among one of the highly qualified black coaches in the US was “something that was written in the stars”.

“It’s now 10 years, or a decade, since I’ve been recognised as a highly qualified Black coach in the USA and the most decorated tennis coach in Zimbabwe.

“It’s also 10 years of service as a USTA coaching tennis specialist, and it feels so good looking at my background, growing up in Harare’s high-density suburb of Mufakose.”

Mashonganyika, a holder of the ITF Level 1 and 2 coaching courses since 2001, owes everything to the tennis-loving people of Mufakose and Zimbabwe in general.

“Success is never achieved in isolation. Every accomplished professional carries with them the lessons, sacrifices, and opportunities that shaped our journey.” Remembering where we came from is not about looking back — it’s about honouring the foundation that allowed us to move forward and using that perspective to lift others along the way.”

Apart from being a USPTA coaching tennis specialist, Mashonganyika is the founder and CEO of the USA Junior Tennis Initiative, based in Loudoun County, Virginia.

In 2021, he made history as the first Zimbabwean nominated to the USTA national volunteer committee, a milestone reflecting his leadership and long-standing commitment to advancing tennis development and inclusion nationwide.

Mashonganyika began playing tennis in 1984 at the Mufakose Tennis Coaching Agency here in Harare under the guidance of director of tennis, Albert Nhamoyebonde, launching a career that spans more than four decades across three continents.

He has coached and developed ITF junior players, collegiate athletes, and Davis Cup players, with professional experience in the United States, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

His leadership background includes serving as tennis director at White Rhinos Tennis Club, secretary general of the Tennis Coaches Association of Zimbabwe, and development coach for Tennis Zimbabwe.

In the United States, he has become a recognised specialist in junior development, high school, and collegiate player pathways, with a focus on competitive player development and long-term athlete growth.

Mashonganyika holds extensive international credentials, including USPTA Elite Tennis Professional, USPTA specialist in competitive player development, PTR international certifications in adult, junior, and performance development, ITF Level 1 and 2 coaching certifications, USTA high performance coaching, USTA sports science, cardio tennis, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair pickleball, archery basic instructor, winter basketball instructor and USTA 10 and Under tennis specialist credentials.

He is also a certified tennis teaching professional with Tennis Zimbabwe and Tennis South Africa.

A nationally recognised advocate for diversity, equity, and access in sport, Mashonganyika has served on several USTA committees, including the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (2021–2022), Public Parks and Recreation Committee (2023–2024), and the USTA national volunteer red ball taskforce (2025).

His honours include being named a 2018 USPTA Top 10 education credit earner among more than 15 000 coaches nationwide, receiving the 2023 USPTA Mid-Atlantic Division Star Award of the Year, and being selected as a 2024 USTA Mid-Atlantic Tennis in the Classroom Honouree.

Through coaching, leadership, and community engagement, Mashonganyika continues to champion the belief that tennis is for everyone, using the sport as a lifelong platform for education, character development, and opportunity.

Mashonganyika is an international tennis expert with extensive global coaching credentials.

He holds ITF Level 1 and Level 2 coaching certifications and is a recognised professional with both Tennis Zimbabwe and Tennis South Africa.

He has coached high-performance players under the USTA coaching system and is a USPTA specialist in competitive player development.

In addition, Mashonganyika has achieved certification across all three PTR International Education and Certification Pathways: adult development, junior development, and performance.
