A widespread power outage plunged large parts of Bulawayo into darkness on Saturday, May 10, 2025, after a burnt switch gear crippled the city’s supply infrastructure, the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) confirmed.
In a statement, ZETDC said the affected areas include Luveve, Gwabalanda, Old and New Lobengula, Pelandaba, Matshobana, Mpopoma, Njube, Emakhandeni, Barbourfields, Nguboyenja, Makokoba, Mzilikazi, and surrounding suburbs.
ZETDC said restoration efforts are underway, with teams working to ensure full restoration of service in the shortest possible time. However, residents expressed frustration and anger over the prolonged outage, citing spoiled food, disrupted studies, and safety concerns.
The electricity supplier warned the public to treat all circuits as live during the outage, as power could return without notice.
ZETDC apologized for the inconvenience, but the city’s western suburbs remained without electricity as of nightfall, leaving residents to grapple with the challenges posed by the blackout.
