BULAWAYO will in May host the Zimbabwe Lawn Bowls Association Masters tournament which is used to select players for the Africa States bowls tournament set for South Africa later in the year. ZLBA president Malcolm Evans said that the Masters tournament set for 23-25 May is an invitational national selection criteria for bowlers who will represent Zimbabwe in South Africa.

“Last year, we scooped a gold medal in the first quadrangular tournament in the men’s competition at Windhoek Country Club which featured Zimbabwe, South Africa and the host Namibia, hence we are quite confident that we will retain the same feat,’’ he said.

“The Masters will be a three-day event and one of the biggest tournaments which draws the country’s top 10 bowlers, we have not yet decided on the venue as yet but in due course we will notify individuals when we do,” he outlined.

Evans mentioned that it will be a singles tournament and the association currently does not have a juniors team as compared to other competing nations who fielded their junior development side.

Bowls is an ancient sport and though it can be played on grass as an outdoor game, there is the use of synthetic surfaces, which is suitable for both outdoors and indoors and facilities can either be constructed or transportable mats.
