It never rains but pours for the ambitious Zifa Eastern Region Division One side, Masvingo United after it’s trusted coach Ezekiel Mutoda threw in the towel.
The most supported team in the region was enjoying a purple patch sending warning shots to other competitors by turning its home ground, Mucheke Stadium fearsome as no team would come out with a win. It is on position four on the log. Hopes were high that the team could win the championship.
Mutoda, a high school teacher by profession with a degree in sport and Class C Caf licence, and one of the most qualified coaches in the ancient city, was already showing his pedigree in the field of play despite the team’s poor financial backing.
According to the team chairman, Hubert Fidze, Mutoda parted ways with the team in a painful way as he had shown dedication and commitment regardless of the obvious challenges.
“It is true that we parted ways with Mutoda. He resigned at his own volition and was never forced out. Life goes on, we are soldiering on as a team,” said Fidze.
He was at pains to explain how the promising coach had jumped ship at the critical time.
“We were left with a few points away from the top team, Tenax and no team was taking us lightly. We surprisingly lost to Buffalo at home and I think that could be the source of Mutoda’s fallout with the team. However, the rest is history now, we have taken back former defence stalwart, Godfrey Dondo from playing into coaching the team and he seems to be doing well,” he said.
Mutoda said the situation was no longer conducive to continue working as a leader at Una Una, as the team is affectionately known by its supporters.
“I developed cold feet due to dressing room challenges. I could no longer control my dressing room and when a coach sees that happening, it is hard to win matches, so I amicably walked out. I however, wish the team the best because I am part of the family as a resident of Masvingo plus I also want to watch PSL matches here,” said Mutoda.
Sources however, said Mutoda had a fallout with his assistant coach, Alexander Kwangwari, also a former player over team selection for the game against Buffalo FC and he decided to call it quits.
Kwangwari has also since stopped attending trainings leaving Dondo being in charge of the team, albeit in the interim basis. — @walterbmswazie2
