Masvingo Council under fire over houses

MASVINGO City Council has come under fire for frustrating deserving members of a house ownership scheme amid reports that the local authority was now planning to dispose properties under the scheme on an open market at the expense of sitting tenants.

Council last year proposed to dispose its rented houses, about 50, to sitting tenants at discounted rates. Residents and occupants who spoke to Sunday News expressed dismay over the local authority’s U-turn alleging that councillors were now divorcing themselves from a resolution they made last year.

However, Masvingo Mayor Councillor Hubert Fidze dismissed the allegations and said residents were fed with incorrect information about the scheme.

“I think residents are misinformed. We have never said that houses would be open to everyone. As far as council is concerned the matter has not been finalised and tentatively, we agreed that beneficiaries of the house ownership scheme should be the sitting tenants,” said Clr Fidze. — Masvingo Correspondent
