THE Masvingo chapter of Rotary Club has secured $100,000 to refurbish all public toilets that had remained dilapidated for a long time in the city.
According to the latest council minutes, the Chief Environmental Health officer, Zvapano Munganasa, said the state of the city’s public toilets was of great concern and the Masvingo chapter of Rotary Club had offered to start rehabilitating them starting this month.
“Concern was raised on the state of public toilets in the CBD that there’s a need to upgrade them. The Chief Environment Health Officer Zvapano Munganasa concurred with the observation and reported that Rotary Club Masvingo had indicated they had secured some funding for upgrading the public toilets. The club is said to have secured $100,000 for the project,” the minutes read.
In a separate interview, Munganasa said council was grateful to Rotary Club for its gesture.
The Masvingo Urban Ratepayers and Residents Alliance (MURRA) said only one public toilet was functional in the CBD.
“We’re concerned with the scarcity of public toilets in our city. We’ve only one public toilet in the CBD along Leopold Takawira Street near a flea market which is overwhelmed. Some public toilets have also been closed with others in a bad state. The offer by Rotary Club Masvingo has come at the right time. We’re happy with this kind of philanthropy,” said MURRA spokesperson Godfrey Mutimba.
