Masvingo man killed over honey

A 19-year-old man from Chiredzi in Masvingo was allegedly fatally struck by his colleague following a dispute over honey, police confirmed yesterday. Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Friday at about 8am. He identified the man as Sydney Zvichirimo of Wasara Range Compound.

He said the suspect Enock Chauke was still at large and police have since launched a manhunt.

Insp Zhanero said on the fateful day Zvichirimo was herding cattle in the company of Chauke, Crispen Matasva (42) and Salan Sabawa.

He said while they were in the bush, Zvichirimo and Chauke spotted a hole which they thought had honey.

“They suspected there was honey in the hole since there were bees flying around it. Zvichirimo and Chauke started digging using an iron bar that they had,” said Insp Zhanero.

“Sabawa and Matasva did not stop but continued with driving the cattle back to the compound.  They moved for a distance without having sight of Zvichirimo and Chauke. Sabawa and Matasva then went back to look for the pair since it was time to pen the cattle.

“After moving some distance they found the lifeless body of Zvichirimo lying on its back in a pool of blood but Chauke was nowhere to be seen.

“His head was covered with blood. A blood stained iron bar was beside the body and a small pit had been dug near the corpse.”

Insp Zhanero said Sabawa drove the cattle to the compound with the hope to find Chauke home but did not see him.

“Sabawa advised Mr Martin Sibanda, a neighbour who reported the matter to ZRP Chiredzi,” he said.

Police suspect the two had an altercation during the course of digging for honey.
