JEREMIAH Moyana, the director of the eagerly awaited Zimbabwe Easter Chess Championship, says Masvingo is ready to host the four-day tournament.

The tournament will be held from April 3 to 6.

According to the Zimbabwe Chess Federation, 100 players have so far registered to take part.

Moyana, who has directed the tournament for the past three years, believes the groundwork his team has done will result in a resounding success.

“This is the third time the tournament is being hosted by Masvingo.

“We now know how to deal with possible scenarios and we are ready for any challenges,” Moyana said.

The Zimbabwe Chess Federation has earned praise from the Government for taking the sport to every region of the country.

The tournament attracts players across a wide spectrum, from national masters and promising juniors to ambitious club players and enthusiastic amateurs.

Zambia’s Gillian Bwalya is the defending champion in the men’s section.

Bwalya is aiming to retain the title.

The men’s champion will walk away with US$400, while the women’s champion will pocket US$300.

Moyana highlighted the importance of the tournament to Masvingo and the country.

“I am receiving calls from players who are seeking accommodation.

“The tournament will boost tourism in Masvingo.”

Moyana said the tournament also serves as a meeting point for coaching, talent identification, social connection and the promotion of chess as a tool for sport and education.

He also hailed the Zimbabwe Chess Federation for decentralising the sport, adding that the tournament plays an important role in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

“For four days, players will be glued to their chess boards.

“Chess is a useful tool to combat drugs and other vices, as players will not find time to indulge in drugs and other bad habits.”
