MWENEZI High School has vowed to make an impression at this year’s Copa Coca-Cola Under-16 boys’ national soccer championships set for Sakubva High School in Mutare tomorrow. The school head Cuthbert Chuma said the boys were ready for the finals and would like to leave an impression.
“While we know that the competition will be tough we have prepared well for the finals. We are focused and promise that we are going to do well,” said Chuma.
He said the boys would represent the province well. Of his players he said he was confident that the boys would rise to the occasion.
“We have gritty players who can perform to our expectations. With the right attitude we can bring the cup to Masvingo,” he said.
Mwenezi has talent in the form of skipper Kudakwashe Muzeza, an attacking midfielder, Brian Muzaa and winger Sakani Chauke who have talent and can play at any level.
However, Chuma said it was Muza and Muzeza who can prove deadly to the opponents.
The players were vital to the team during the provincial finals.
Mwenezi will be accompanied by Chidyamakono High School who will represent the province in the girls’ Under-17 category finals.
To get that far Chidyamakono beat soccer powerhouse, Pamushana in a tightly contested final a fortnight ago.
The otherwise underrated school managed to outdo 10 other schools who were vying for the ticket to Mutare.
On their way to the provincial final they beat Chiredzi Christian High School 2-1 and Mashoko 1-0 in the preliminaries before proceeding to the final in which they beat Chibi High School 2-0.
In the final they met the hosts and defending provincial champions and last year’s losing finalists.
Pamushana accounted for Dewure (1-0) and St Joseph High School (5-1) and knocked out Gutu in the semi-finals.
