ZANU-PF Matabeleland North has hailed First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe for her efforts at boosting the Bulawayo Kraal Irrigation Scheme in Binga, saying the initiative will transform the lives of the people in the area.

Addressing the Presidential Youth Interface Rally in Lupane last Friday, Amai Mugabe revealed that she had identified partners to work with at the irrigation scheme that has seen 100 hectares of land being put under seed maize that will be distributed to all parts of the country.

She said there were plans to fully utilise the 15 000 hectares of the project in the next five years with a concentration on high value crops.

Party provincial chairperson Cde Richard Moyo said: “We are happy as a province with the efforts of the First Lady at boosting the irrigation scheme.

“Besides creating employment, the project will ensure food security in the area and do away with donor dependency as some of these NGOs use food to push political agendas of hostile nations. It is our hope that with time, the project will be expanded to its full capacity so that many people benefit.”

Amai Mugabe said Matabeleland North was rich in natural resources that could be utilised to bring development to the province.

“The land (at Bulawayo Kraal) is part of those resources that should benefit and improve the livelihoods of the people of Binga and this is the wish of President Mugabe. We will continue working, we will be coming back in August to check how our seed maize crop is doing,” Amai Mugabe said.
