“However, not much of foot and mouth has been witnessed though there have been complaints of an outbreak of lumpy skin on pedigree cattle,” said Mrs Adlam.
She said most of the entries had been judged.
“In the produce section we have 1 304 entries which were judged on Monday. In home industries we have 850 entries. All results are being collated.
“Pedigree cattle are being exhibited by Khami Prison and Matopos Research.
“Fatstock has 97 entries. Weighing and mouthing was done today and judging will be done tomorrow,” she said.
Meanwhile, livestock farmers have been warned to be on alert for botulism and blackleg which are widespread during drought.
District veterinary officer for Nkayi Dr Ndabezinhle Mkhwananzi said farmers should vaccinate their livestock ahead of the winter season.
This year the country experienced erratic rains with the Government expressing concern that there might be a serious drought.
The diseases are more prevalent in Matabeleland North and South.
“The best way to avoid fatalities is for the farmers to vaccinate their livestock as we approach winter. Botulism and blackleg are more prevalent during drought,” said Dr Mkhwananzi.
He said farmers should refrain from feeding their livestock with protein supplements only.
“Farmers should ensure that they give their livestock supplement feeds which include mineral blocks such as calcium-phosphorous instead of supplementing with protein.
“Botulism is a disease caused by ingesting clostridium botulinum toxin and is found in most animal species and occasionally in people.
“The disease is caused by consuming material contaminated by a toxin produced by clostridium botulinum bacteria.
“The outbreaks tend to occur during winter and enter animals through internal parasites. I urge farmers get in touch with the veterinary department once they suspect that their livestock is affected by botulism.”
