MATABELELAND Action Sports Foundation will introduce mini football in primary schools this year after receiving the nod from the World Mini Football Association.

The foundation deals with small sided games as five, six a-side, touch rugby, indoor cricket and volleyball among other games.

Foundation Development director Tawanda Muchechete said they were mandated by WMFA to introduce the discipline to primary schools.

“We received a mandate from the WMFA this year to take mini-football to schools at primary level and approached several schools who seem interested in endorsing the sporting code, so we are waiting for the green light from the Ministry of Sport and Recreation,” said Muchechete.

Muchechete revealed that the sport would be launched next month in schools once the Ministry of Sport and Recreation has approved the application.

“We will launch the sporting code in March once the approval has been granted by the ministry and the sport is incorporated the into the schools’ sports calendar by the National Association of Primary Schools Heads,” he said.

He also revealed that the foundation has engaged with various sponsors who have previously worked with Naph for partnership.

“We have approached various organisations that have sponsored sporting activities at primary school level as the Proton Bakery on partnership and the talks have reached an advanced stage. Also the foundation received funding for equipment including kits, balls, trophies and medals that will be used in the mini football competitions,” Muchechete said.

WMFA pledged to support the growth of the discipline by building the sporting facilities as the mini football centres in communities so that the children can engage in the sport at a young age.
