MATABELELAND Golf Association (MGA) has wrapped up its season on a high note following the successful staging of the Harry Allen Classic at Harry Allen Golf Club in Bulawayo this past weekend. MGA president Vusi Sinyoka expressed satisfaction with the way the province delivered its golfing calendar, describing 2025 as a year of progress and renewed momentum.
Four provincial tournaments carrying World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points were held during the year, beginning with the traditional season opener, the Dugmore and Fellowship at Bulawayo Golf Club in January. This was followed by the Matabeleland Amateur at Bulawayo Country Club in March, then the Mzilikazi Classic in September at the same venue, before the Harry Allen Classic brought the curtain down on the season. For the first time, the Harry Allen Classic was a WAGR-rated event, adding prestige to the provincial circuit.
Sinyoka said he was pleased with participation levels, noting that all four events were won by championship players. Tanaka Chatora claimed the Dugmore Trophy, Keegan Shutt triumphed in the Matabeleland Amateur, Michael Wallace took the honours at the Mzilikazi Classic, and Elton Zulu sealed the season with victory at the Harry Allen Classic.
“We successfully hosted all the provincial tournaments in a good way. We had the Dugmore and Fellowship, we had the Matabeleland Amateur, the Mzilikazi Classic and recently we had the Harry Allen Classic and all of them were a success and well attended. The participation has been good and we also had the provincial leagues that we resuscitated and it has received positive response. Overall, 2025 has been a good year for us,” said Sinyoka.
Looking ahead, Sinyoka said MGA intends to maintain the same momentum in 2026, with plans to host the league championship and expand the provincial calendar.
“Next year, we will still have the four provincial championships but we are also hoping that we will be able to host the league championship, our response was a bit late and it has gone to another club. We still need to up our games and have more of such tournaments. I hope Elephant Hills will also come on board and we make it a provincial tournament,” he said.
At the Harry Allen Classic, Zulu delivered a composed performance, closing with a level-par 72 to secure a three-shot victory over Blessing Gondo. His final tally of four-over-par 220 earned him the championship and marked his third win of the season. The Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) calendar now moves to its final event of the year, the Platinum Classic, which tees off today at Norton Golf Club.
