THE Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has launched the “Not in My School” campaign in Matabeleland South, an initiative aimed at curbing violence, bullying and other forms of abuse in schools.

The campaign seeks to ensure a safe learning environment for pupils, as well as a secure working environment for staff members.
Authorities say violence, gangsterism, cyberbullying, drug and substance abuse, stigma and discrimination, school dropouts and peer violence are among the vices affecting the school environment.

In some areas where artisanal mining is prevalent, learners have reportedly brought knives and machetes to school to intimidate or attack others.
Through the national campaign, authorities hope to instil a new culture and re-establish schools as safe spaces for learners. The initiative also aims to guard against the abuse of learners outside the school environment.
Speaking during the launch at Jahunda Primary School Hall on Monday, Matabeleland South Provincial Education Services chief director, Mrs Beatrice Manjere, said a one-day workshop had been held to capacitate stakeholders ahead of the campaign’s rollout to districts.
The workshop was attended by Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education provincial staff, representatives from line ministries, school heads, teachers, learners and partners.
Key objectives included developing “safe to learn” initiatives and key messages to drive the campaign, reviewing Child Protection Committee guidelines and ensuring their effectiveness in every school.
The workshop also focused on developing strategies to create a safe environment for learners.
