Sikhumbuzo Moyo, Check Point
MATABELELAND South police have launched a manhunt for an as yet to be identified suspect who impregnated a 13-year-old minor that later gave birth mid-air as she was being airlifted from Maphisa Hospital to United Bulawayo Hospitals following birth complications.
The dramatic birth incident occurred early this month when the minor had just been airlifted by the Helidrive National Air Rescue Service following some complications.
Matabeleland South police provincial spokesperson Inspector Chiratidzo Dube said police had now put hands on the deck with thorough investigations already underway with the sole objective of identifying, finding and apprehending the suspect. She said the rules of engagement in the investigation involved identifying and interviewing witnesses.
“As police Matabeleland South, we are thoroughly investigating the matter. This involves identifying witnesses and interviewing them to gather evidence. It also involves apprehending the suspect whilst ensuring the victim receives support and the justice they deserve,” said Insp Dube.
The minor’s delivery doctor, Dr Marshall Kahari, as he recounted the mid air life-saving process, said the delicate, yet precise procedure began just seven minutes after the helicopter lifted off, en route to Bulawayo.
