MATABELELAND South High schools which are not offering science subjects risk losing their Advanced Level status.
This comes after revelations that less than 30 percent of schools in the province are teaching science subjects at A-Level. The provincial education director for Matabeleland South, Tumisang Thabela said the new government policy was that a school without capacity to offer science subjects will not be granted A-Level status.
Addressing headmasters and councillors at an education workshop in Plumtree, Thabela said it was a government requirement that all schools teach science subjects at A-Level.
She however, conceded that the province was struggling to secure teachers for science subjects.
“It is worrying to note that less than 30 percent of our schools offer science subjects at A-Level and as such our capacity to feed tertiary institutions such as the National University of Science and Technology is seriously compromised,” said Thabela.
She said in order to ensure all schools teach science subjects at A-Level, no school will be granted A-Level status without an A-Level science laboratory.
She said there was an urgent need for authorities at schools without the science labs to build these important facilities. Thabela said schools that failed to comply risked being deregistered as A-Level offering schools.
