AFTER the challenges he faced at CAPS United, Mark Mathe will be hoping to make a huge impact when he takes charge of ambitious Golden Eagles.
He replaced Gilbert Mushangazhike, who was sacked, after a challenging start to the ZIFA Northern Region Division One championship race.
The Eagles, who were the championship favourites, are five points off the pace.
Mathe’s next two assignments are against Chinhoyi Stars and MWOS FC.
“Golden Eagles Football Club would like to officially announce the departure of Head Coach Gilbert Mushangazhike by mutual consent,” read a club statement.
“The club expresses its gratitude to Coach Mushangazhike for his hard work, dedication and contribution to the team during his tenure in charge, and wishes him well in his future endeavours.
“Assistant Coach Mark Mathe will take over as interim Head Coach and lead the team in the upcoming crucial assignments against Chinhoyi Stars and MWOS FC.
“The club is confident in Coach Mathe’s abilities and is committed to supporting him and the team.”
Mushangazhike will probably reflect on what could have been had his side managed to hold on, instead of conceding a last-gasp equaliser, in their big game against Simba Bhora last season.
It made the difference between a place in the Premiership and another season in Division One.
Meanwhile, Black Mambas became the first team in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One Soccer League to beat Ngezi Platinum Stars when they edged Kifton Kadurira’s men 2-1 on Saturday.
Tafadzwa George grabbed the winner with a stunning free kick which gave ‘keeper, Prince Mujuru no chance at the stroke of full-time.
Black Mambas are now on 14 points and just a point behind leaders Ngezi.
It was not a dream start for Lloyd Mutasa who drew 1-1 against ZRP Harare FC at Ngoni on Saturday on his first assignment as MWOS coach.
Concession United stretched their losing streak to six games as they suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of Herentals Under-20 side.
