Maths exam cheat fined $200

A Victoria Falls man who wrote the O-Level Mathematics Paper 1 examination for his brother was yesterday fined $200. Police arrested Bright Dube, 21, who lives at Victoria Falls Police Camp as he left the examination room at Ndlovu Secondary School on Tuesday.

A court heard how suspicious invigilators informed the police who waited for him to finish writing the examination.

He pleaded guilty to sitting an examination with intention to impersonate another person when he appeared before Victoria Falls resident magistrate Sharon Rosemani yesterday.

The magistrate said Dube would spend 14 weeks in jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Dube said his brother Modreck begged him to write the exam on his behalf.

“I knew that it was illegal to sit an examination for someone else but my brother begged me because he knew I would pass. I attained a Grade C when I wrote my examinations and he wanted me to write for him because he feared he would get a U,” Dube said.

Prosecuting, Takunda Ndovorwi said Bright impersonated Modreck, who works at TM supermarket to write the examination for him.

“The accused used his brother Modreck Dube’s National Identity card and went to the examination venue where he sat for a Mathematics paper,” said Ndovorwi.

He said an alert invigilator suspected foul play as he was doing some random checks.

The teacher observed some irregularities between Bright and the picture on the ID card and alerted her superiors, the court heard.
