THE Zimbabwe Youth Education through Sports (YES) finals kick off in Masvingo today with all the country’s 10 provinces taking part.
All three Matabeleland provinces are confident of doing well in an event in which winners will get a chance to represent the country in Tanzania and Norway.Past winners include Chipembere of Gweru and Bulawayo’s New Orleans and Inline Academy.
Bulawayo’s Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) co-ordinator Sam Dzvimbu said he had faith in the team.
“I was impressed by the teams at the provincial finals, the way they performed, we expect nothing less than gold medals in Masvingo,” said Dzvimbu.
Bulawayo will be represented by three secondary schools Eveline, Amhlophe and Magwegwe while Mpumelelo and Josiah Chinamano Primary Schools will also be in action.
Matabeleland North co-ordinator Newman Masuku said there are out to break the jinx that has seen the province tail-enders in most national junior events.
“For the past two years, I feel like we are improving as a province and I hope this time will show it at the national stage,” said Masuku.
His team was boosted by a donation of tracksuits bought by Zimta and presented by the Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cain Mathema.
Matabeleland South’s co-ordinator Lifa Mpofu said he had faith in the team as they have shown character at past national events.
“We have done well in the past at this event. We are gunning for gold,” said Mpofu.
Athletes will compete in three disciplines soccer, volleyball and netball as well as community service.
Only athletes below the age of 15 are eligible.
