MASHONALAND were crowned victors of the Zimbabwe National Junior Swimming Championships which ended at Petra Junior School yesterday. To win Mashonaland collected 1,237.5 points while the hosts Matabeleland Province were second with 610 points. Mashonaland Country Districts were third with 353 points while Midlands and Masvingo collected 36,5 and 9 respectively.
Nomvula Mjimba from Mashonaland finished first on individual standings in the girls’ section with 50 points.
In the boys’ section Dylan Haung was top with 48 points in the Under-11 age-group.
Matabeleland’s, Joash Mckonie scored 39 points to top the Under-12 category on individual rankings.
Matabeleland swimming board chairperson Eddie Cyprianos was impressed with the level of competition exhibited by the juniors despite the harsh weather.
“It was a good event, unfortunately we didn’t win, and that’s what we always fighting for, Mashonaland had more quality than us.
“We had a number of swimmers that didn’t score points, so it becomes difficult to beat them on average points,” said Cyprianos.
Mashonaland had the most swimmers with a team of 63 followed by Matabeleland who had 36.
The national association’s Lorna Riley was impressed with the competition.
Matabeleland gold medallists included Timea Shultz, Mckonie, Alex Van Wyk and Denilson Cyprianos,
Rollo Riana, Aisha Mohammed, Green Lashay, Berthia Muntunga, Theo Marimira, Cooke Ty, Hailey Banda, Erin Bent and Cooke Shannon in the relays.
Masvingo and Midlands both failed to get a medal each during the swimming gala.
