LOCAL Afrocentric music ensemble Matojeni Melomaniacs is demonstrating the universal power of music and dance as it carries Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage to audiences across Europe, captivating crowds through rhythm, movement and tradition that speak beyond the boundaries of language.
The group, which has steadily built a reputation as a cultural ambassador for Zimbabwe, is currently touring Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and Italy, using traditional music and dance to forge meaningful connections with audiences in countries where English is not commonly spoken.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Gugulethu Sibanda said the tour had been a deeply rewarding experience, with audiences embracing their performances enthusiastically despite the linguistic differences that might otherwise separate them.
“The experience of performing in Europe has been nothing but amazing. Each venue, each festival and each audience brings something special for us to remember long after the show is over. The most important factor being that there’s always a language barrier because our audiences in Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany are all non-English speaking. So through each performance, most of the communication is through the music and dance that we share with them and how it makes them feel,” said Sibanda.
She said the response from audiences had reaffirmed the group’s belief that cultural exchange is one of the most powerful ways of bringing people together, adding that they take immense pride in representing both Zimbabwean culture and the nation itself on international stages.
“The love we’ve received everywhere we’ve performed has been quite overwhelming because it always comes as a huge surprise to us. We continue to praise God for the amazing opportunity to be ambassadors of not just our culture, but our country as well,” said Sibanda.
Matojeni Melomaniacs first embarked on its European touring journey in 2023 and has since continued to expand its footprint across the continent, introducing new audiences to the vibrant sounds, dances and storytelling traditions that define Zimbabwean culture.
“Since we started touring Europe in 2023, we’ve performed in Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany is our latest addition to our tour destinations,” said Sibanda.
