THE PPC Matopos Ultrathon has continued to grow in pursuit of higher standards and during this yeara��s half and full marathons, all participating athletes will be electronically timed.
As opposed to the previous editions, this yeara��s contest set to take place on 1 April at Matopos National Park, will see the athletesA� go on to receive their individual results.
a�?Accurate timing is a hallmark of every great marathon and strides are taken to align with global racing standards every year. This event is a prime example of home-grown solutions for the development of the region,a�? said the eventa��s spokesperson Stephanie Taderera.
She added: a�?Many cities around the world have established marathons that receive considerable exposure, and the PPC Matopos Miler seeks to put Bulawayo, Matopos and the region on the map, boosting the local economy and lending a festive air to the city.a�?
The 2016 edition of the race attracted almost 600 runners, and 750 participants are expected for the 2017 event.
The 33-Miler ultrathon will begin at 5am at Matopos National Park, with the half marathon beginning at 5.30am on Woolandale Road. The 10km race will start at 7am from Tshabalala Game Reserve, with the 5km fun run beginning at Hamilton High School.
The first edition of the Matopos 33 Miller was held in 1963, along much of the same route.
The race maiden winner was Charlie Chae of Germiston, South Africa, who conquered the route in three hours, 44 minutes and 56 seconds.
