MDC-T Masvingo provincial secretary Mr Tongai Matutu has threatened to quit the embattled party over allegations that he failed the party during the 31 January harmonised elections that saw the opposition party losing all the seats in the province to Zanu-PF.
The former Masvingo Urban legislator has said if the province feels that his services as the secretary of the party in the province were no longer needed, he was prepared to step down.
In an interview this week, Mr Matutu said that if indeed members feel that he contributed to the party’s crushing defeat in the elections where they lost all 26 seats to Zanu-PF in Masvingo Province, he has no reason to remain in the executive. “If I am no longer relevant to the party I will step down. I am ready for that,” he said.
The outspoken former Deputy Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment acknowledged the existence of serious factionalism and said those who were calling for his outster were from a rival faction.
“I believe those who are vocal and calling for the firing of our provincial executive are from a rival faction. These are people planted by a rival faction but if they think that the party was on auto-pilot all along then they should remove us and see what happens,” he said.
Mr Matutu said he has worked tirelessly and in some instances sponsored the party activities from his pocket.
“We sacrificed our resources for the party but now someone with no depth or direction wants us out. That is the work of people with shallow minds,” he said.
Mr Matutu said what party members should realise is that everything is worked for. “What they do not know is MDC-T muti wakakuva (a tree which has no fruits). I don’t know why people want to play dirty games to ascend to positions,” he said.
