A MENTALLY challenged patient ran amok, beat up a nurse before  allegedly killing an 84-year-old fellow patient at Filabusi District Hospital, police said yesterday.
The incident happened on Sunday night.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Ngwenya said Sindiso Moyo (25) of Gwangwadzi Village, Debshan Range in Fort Rixon under Chief Jahana was admitted to Filabusi District Hospital.

Due to his mental illness, Moyo was handcuffed to protect other patients and people around him from any possible wild behaviour.
However, Asst Insp Ngwenya said Moyo suddenly became violent and broke the handcuffs.

Asst Insp Ngwenya said he beat up a nurse and fatally assaulted another patient, Arimando Siwela.
“On 13 October at around 10pm, Siwela was admitted to Filabusi Hospital in the same ward with the accused person, Moyo. The accused who was handcuffed suddenly became violent and broke the handcuffs.

“He started to assault one of the nurses, Mr Jematias Mthandwa (20) who is employed at Filabusi Hospital,” he said.
Asst Insp Ngwenya said Mthandwa was bitten on the right leg before he escaped.

Moyo then turned to the helpless old man who was also being treated at the hospital.
“The accused turned to Arimando and assaulted him with an unknown object on the right cheek and leg. As a result, Arimando sustained a broken jaw and a deep laceration on the leg,” said Asst Insp Ngwenya.

After the incident, Moyo escaped from the hospital leaving Siwela in pain.
“Due to the injuries sustained, Arimando died the following day at around 4am,”’ said Asst Insp Ngwenya.
The matter was reported to the police who arrested Moyo.
