VETERAN boxing promoter, Stalin Mau Mau, is now mobilising funds to stage the biggest boxing tournament in the country’s history.
It has been set for May 8 and has been dubbed “The great boxing revival.”
The tourney will have 36 boxers, from different clubs, battling it out for honours.
This is the first-time, in the history of Zimbabwean boxing, to have a tournament with such a huge number of boxers, taking part.
“As we are preparing for this tournament, we are expecting the corporate world to come on board, and sponsor boxing, which has been overlooked by most potential sponsors,” said Mau Mau.
“The youths are indulging in drug abuse, because they are staying idle, hence the need for them to spend most of their time in gyms, building their bodies and engaging in professional fights.
“This can earn them money instead of being drug traffickers.” Mau Mau said the boxers were back in training and being tested.
The legendary promoter has been the soul of the game, in the country, battling against the odds to keep the sport alive.
He has been involved with some of the country’s best boxers, either as a manager, or a promoter.
Mau Mau believes Zimbabwe has the potential of producing a world boxing champion and says he wants to be part of that project.
