Zimbabwe should produce 5 000 MW of electricity by 2020 if ongoing and envisaged projects come to fruition, Energy and Power Development Minister Dzikamai Mavhaire, has said.
He was speaking at a ministerial forum at the National Defence College in Harare on Wednesday.
“If we implement all the projects in terms of power production, by 2020 we must be able to produce in the region of 5 000 MW.
“Currently, Zimbabwe needs 2 000 MW and we are producing 1 370 MW. We need to surpass 2 000 MW because with Zim-asset we do not know what we will need by that time,” he said.
He said some of the projects included the expansion of Kariba Hydro Power Station, Hwange Thermal Power Station, and the rehabilitation of the Bulawayo, Munyati and Harare Thermal Power stations.
The Gwanda Solar Energy project is also in the pipeline.
The Batoka Gorge Hydro-Power project and Sengwe Thermal Power station are expected to boost electricity generation as well.
