MAWENI FC are the winners of the inaugural Gwanda North Sports Tournament that was played on Sunday at the Maweni Business Centre.

The tourney was sponsored to the tune of R20 000 by Zanu PF politician and gold miner Lungisani Costa Ncube.

The hosts beat Stezi FC one nil.

All the teams that participated in the tourney – Maweni, Stezi, Gqalaza, Simbumbumbu, Mayezani, Mapane and Mahwanke – are based Gwanda North Constituency.
Maweni FC walked away with R5 000 while Stezi got R3 000. Third placed Gqalaza was awarded R2 000 while the remaining four teams were given R1 000 each.

In the ladies category Simbumbumbu were the victors and took home R2 500. The other three ladies teams were also rewarded for their participation.

All men’s and women’s teams were given kits.

Tournament sponsor Ncube said the initiative to bankroll the event was to reinforce President Mnangagwa’s call for communities to unite against drug and substance abuse.

“Our visionary leader, President Mnangagwa, whose leadership has made it possible for us to be able to operate businesses in our country, is on a drive to eliminate drug and substance abuse.

“This is my way of emulating the President’s vision in fighting the scourge. Sports brings communities together, including the youth, who are at the centre of this campaign to rid our society of drugs,” said Ncube.

He said he believes keeping young people engaged through sport and positive community events can help steer them away from harmful behaviour, adding that the programme is also aimed at encouraging discipline and unity.
