HIV Prevention Soccer League’s Mayellow FC yesterday lifted the World Aids Day Cup after beating Makopo FC 3-2 in a final played at Ndola ground in Iminyela, Bulawayo.
A brace from Ophias Banda and a goal from Gilbert Gore were enough for Mayellow to clinch the title while Makopo FC had Moffat Sonje hitting a brace. Mayellow FC walked away with a floating shield and $500 with Makopo FC pocketing $400. The tournament was part of World Aids Day commemorations whose theme was
“Closing the tap of new HIV infection.”
Youth Creative Ideas (YCI) partnered with the National Aids Council (NAC) to form the HIV Prevention Soccer League whose aim is to create awareness for HIV and Aids through soccer.
Organisations such as Restless Development, Community Working Group on Health (CWGH), Rehabilitation and Prevention of Tubercolosis (RAPT), Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council, Population Services International, Positive Living Association of Zimbabwe, Matabeleland Aids Council, Builders International, Dot Youth, and World Vision teamed up to make the World Aids Day tournament a success.
“We are happy that this event was a success and as a league we also thank our all sponsors who made it possible to have such a tournament. Our aim is to teach Bulawayo teams to get involved in health issues and soccer is another way of drawing large numbers of people together so that we educate them,” said HIV Prevention Soccer League president Mthokozisi Ndlovu.
Meanwhile, FC Chelsea beat Lobengula Youth Centre 3-0 to take home $250 with the latter getting $150.
