HARARE mayor, Jacob Mafume, has called for mandatory cleanliness principles to be implemented in schools to instil a sense of responsibility towards maintaining a clean and safe city.

The Harare City Council and the Environmental Management Agency have been conducting the Catch Them Young Programme in schools to teach young minds about cleanliness.

Mafume said that children should understand that cleanliness is not just a personal obligation, but a national duty.

He also urged residents to develop a deeper understanding of the connection between cleanliness and health, and how they dispose of their garbage to prevent potential harm to their health.

Mafume believes that by making cleanliness education mandatory, a cleaner and healthier future can be achieved.

“By making cleanliness education mandatory, we can lay the foundation for a cleaner and healthier future.

“Residents need to realise that maintaining a clean environment is directly linked to our well-being.

“What we eat can potentially harm us if it comes into contact with unhygienic conditions.

“When we finish eating, it is essential to dispose of our garbage in designated areas to prevent it from posing a threat to our health,” said Mafume.
