BULAWAYO Mayor, David Coltart has urged newly recruited municipal police officers to embrace community service as a core value and engage proactively with residents to find solutions to local challenges.

Addressing the officers at their pass-out parade at the Large City Hall car park yesterday, Clr Coltart highlighted the importance of preventing lawlessness and upholding the city’s by-laws.

The parade comprised 173 officers, including two male and one female sergeant who transferred from other security organisations. The remaining 170 officers consisted of 128 males and 42 females.

“As municipal police, you are the guardians of our neighbourhoods. It is your duty to ensure our streets are safe, justice prevails and the rule of law is upheld throughout the city of Bulawayo,” said Coltart.

He further stressed that the presence of municipal police should not only deter crime but also foster a sense of security within the community.

“Remember, being an officer is not merely about enforcing the law. It is about building strong relationships with the community, earning their trust, and serving as a source of support for those in need,” said Clr Coltart.

He acknowledged the city’s challenges, including problems of controlling the informal sector, public transport, increased vandalism, theft of municipal property and a rise in littering.

He emphasised that the increased officer strength would contribute to a significant improvement in the city’s environment, creating a safer and more valued community for all residents.

“As you don your uniforms, remember that you are entrusted with upholding the rule of law and ensuring a clean and liveable city. You are ambassadors of justice and peace.”

Clr Coltart stressed the importance of integrity, stating, “Integrity is a cornerstone value for the City of Bulawayo. This principle must guide your daily actions. Remember the trust placed in you.

Deliver services impartially and with integrity and remain free from corruption. Uphold the values of Ubuntu in all your endeavours.”

Clr Coltart expressed his gratitude to the training officers and mentors who dedicated themselves to preparing the new recruits, acknowledging their crucial role in equipping the officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the challenges of their roles.

“As we move forward, we must recognise the evolving nature of law enforcement in the city. The challenges we face today are complex, and public expectations are high. We must remain adaptable, embracing innovation and technology to enhance our effectiveness while always upholding our commitment to human rights and dignity,” said Clr Coltart.
