HARARE Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume says the city should have a plan on how water from Kunzvi Dam, which is expected to start accumulating reserves towards the end of this year, will be conveyed, purified and distributed to residents of the capital.
This follows a meeting he had with Makomo Engineering executives last month to discuss the completion of Kunzvi Dam.
Chairing the 1935th Ordinary Council meeting at Town House this week, Clr Mafume said he met with Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) officials, who asked for land to build a purification plant, which will be surrendered to the municipality upon completion.
“So we are not giving them land for free. We are giving them land to build a plant that will primarily be used by the City of Harare.
“This is the Government’s contribution towards solving the water situation in Harare. If that goes well, we should do that. So we want to accelerate plans of building that plant.”
Clr Mafume added: “We also want to accelerate plans of building the pipelines and alter our distribution network to be able to give relief water to those areas (enduring the water crisis).
“They will thereafter build Musami Dam, which will give the same amount of water, which will take a bit more years, but this one will be closer to us.”
He said there is also the pipeline from Muchekeranwa Dam which is supposed to be coming.
“So a lot of things are happening and the water and I think reports should be made to the WASH Committee to be able to deal with these things and monitor them,” said Clr Mafume.
