A RUWA man was on Wednesday jailed for 34 years after he raped his six-year-old stepdaughter and infected her with a sexually-transmitted infection.
The man was convicted after a full trial by Harare regional magistrate Tilda Mazhande.
He was facing two counts of rape and was slapped with 17 years on each count and they will run concurrently.
Prosecutor Heather Mhlanga-Muokoto proved that on the first occasion last year, the complainant was sleeping in the sitting room on a sofa, while Mbofana was sleeping in his bedroom with the victim’s mother.
He called the complainant to join them on the bed and asked her to sleep between them. He then started touching her privates until the girl bolted and returned to the sitting room to sleep on the sofa.
The child did not tell her mother because Mpofu threatened her not to tell anyone. On March 12 this year, the girl was playing with her younger sibling in the bedroom while her mother was outside.
Mbofana entered the bedroom and raped her. Two days later, the girl’s mother noticed that her daughter was having difficulties walking and quizzed her.
She then revealed that she was sexually abused by her stepfather. The girl was medically examined and it was discovered that she had been infected with a sexually-transmitted infection.
