A TOTAL of US$20 000 is set to be raised for this year’s Gwanda Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund, which aims to support over 250 vulnerable community members.
The fund is being launched today at Mount Cazalet Lodge in Gwanda, marking the start of a series of fundraising activities.
The launch will be attended by representatives from the business community, residents, and various stakeholders. The fundraising programme will include a Miss Cheer Gwanda pageant on November 16 and a business seminar on December 6.
Additionally, donation containers will be strategically placed in shops and offices across the town to encourage public contributions.
Addressing journalists and other stakeholders, Gwanda mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo said this year’s target marks a slight increase from last year, when about 200 families were reached out of an initial goal of 150.
He stressed the importance of giving, not just during the festive season, but year-round.
“The festive season is upon us, and it’s time to launch the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund. We have families in our community who will not be able to enjoy the spirit of Christmas due to financial hardships. The fund aims to support those most in need,” said Alderman Moyo.

The targeted beneficiaries include orphans, widows, the elderly, and people living with disabilities. In addition to financial donations, Alderman Moyo encouraged the Gwanda community to offer assistance in any way possible.
“The need for social welfare is great in our communities, and we will continue to seek partnerships to support those in need. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference,” he said.
Alderman Moyo said the business seminar will also serve to empower local businesspeople and foster economic growth within the town.
Speaking at the same event, Gwanda Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund chairperson Mr Methuseli Moyo emphasised the importance of casting a wide net to engage more stakeholders in the fundraising process.
He noted that they will work with the Department of Social Welfare, councillors, churches, and community members to ensure transparency in the selection of beneficiaries.
Mr Moyo expressed plans to extend resource mobilisation efforts throughout the year, aiming to provide ongoing support for vulnerable groups in Gwanda.
“This year, we are going all out to ensure that we mobilise as many resources as possible. We are encouraging everyone to get involved, whether by donating or helping us reach more people,” he said
“Bins will be placed strategically so that anyone and everyone can contribute.” — @DubeMatutu
