ZIMBABWE international striker Nelson Maziwisa believes he impressed South African Premiership side SuperSport amid reports the player will be going back for medicals at the club. The Warriors forward was in Pretoria early last week and had trials for four days at Matsatsansa.
He returned on Friday in time for Zimbabwe’s CHAN qualifier against Zambia at Rufaro on Sunday.
SuperSport sent their assistant coach, Kaitano Tembo, for a final assessment at Rufaro.
Yesterday, reports emerged from South Africa that the player is expected to return to Pretoria this week for medicals before signing a three-year contract. Maziwisa is currently with the national team in camp preparing for the second leg of the CHAN qualifier away in Ndola at the weekend.
He spoke about his trials but refused to shed more light on the impending move.
“I was at the club for trials and they went on well. I was training with their senior team for the four days l was there and featured in some friendly matches they had.
“I wouldn’t know if l made the grade or not but what I know is the coach said l am a good player and seemed satisfied with my performance.
“I would love to play in South Africa and from what l saw l can fit into the team and their type of play. But at the moment l cannot say much and l am just concentrating with the next game against Zambia,” said Maziwisa.
The deal to bring the last year’s Golden Boot winner to SuperSport is being handled by a management team which is based in South Africa.
It was not clear yesterday whether the former Zvishavane striker has impressed SuperSport new coach Cavin Johnson. But a source in South Africa said his handlers there are confident that a deal would be thrashed out in a few days.
“Although he didn’t have a good game on Sunday, the people who are involved in the deal are confident that both parties will agree on something and are so positive that the coach believes the player can add value in the team of the former champions,” said the source.
The club still has one foreign slot.
And the club’s strike force department has seasoned players such as Senegal’s Mame Niang, former Bafana striker Sibusiso Zuma and Bradley Grobler.
Meanwhile, Kick Off reports that speculation over Zimbabwe international midfielder Khama Billiart was finally put to rest yesterday after he agreed personal terms with Mamelodi Sundowns. The Herald exclusively revealed on Saturday that Billiat had agreed terms with Sundowns.
A lot has been going on involving the deal and last week it was reported that the deal was called off by Billiat’s club Ajax Cape Town.
However, yesterday Ajax director Ari Efstathiou was quoted confirming the deal which will see Sundowns Eleazar Rogers going to the Cape Town as part of the swap deal.
“Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns re-engaged and agreed to reinstate the terms of the agreement between the parties involved.
“Khama has agreed to the personal terms offered by Sundowns and as a result Eleazar Rogers will be reporting to Ikamva tomorrow morning.”
Billiat is reported to have signed a five-year-deal.
