Mazowe Rural District council has rehabilitated more than 150km of its road network using the National Road Fund availed by the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (Zinara), a council official has said. In an interview yesterday, Mazowe district engineer Cleopas Mupereki said the council was on course to achieving its set target of rehabilitating 200km by year-end.

“Zinara allocated us funds in phases, which we used to do the road rehabilitations. During the first phase, we received $70 000 and in the second phase we got the money in batches of $32 000, $34 000 and $40 000 separately,” said Eng Mupereki.

“Out of the money, we managed to grade 150km in roads, including 21km of the Mvuri-Mutorashanga Road, 25km in Nyabira and 10km each in Sunside and Foothill.” Eng Mupereki also said the council had patched 12km in the district.

“We patched 3km of Glendale Road and 6,2 and 1km of Concession and Rufaro roads,” he said. Eng Mupereki said the roadworks were being delayed by breakdowns on some of their graders.

“We faced a challenge during the course of the project as some of our motorised vehicle graders were down and the spare parts had to be imported as they were not available on the local market,” he said. Eng Mupereki also bemoaned the unavailability of tar locally.

“Tar is now hard to come by locally. We used to buy it at Msasa Bitumen in Harare,” he said.
