Zanu PF Mazowe District Youth League has donated refuse bins to Glendale Council in a move expected to strengthen waste management, enhance environmental protection and support the modernisation of rural service delivery.
The donation, handed over on Monday, seeks to improve refuse collection in the high-density and Glendale commercial area, where rapid population growth has increased pressure on existing waste management systems.
Speaking on the sidelines of the handover ceremony, Mazowe District Coordinating Committee youth affairs Cde Timothy Gorejena said the initiative reflects their commitment to community development and youth participation in nation-building, in line with Government’s thrust towards rural modernisation and devolution.
“The provision of refuse bins is a practical intervention that speaks directly to environmental sustainability and improved service delivery,” said Gorejena “As young people, we have a responsibility to take the lead in keeping our communities clean and supporting local authorities in delivering quality services.”
Mazowe Rural District Council welcomed the donation, noting that the additional bins will go a long way in promoting proper waste disposal, reducing illegal dumping and improving public health.
Council representative Mr Mitchell Kasere of Ward 33 who is also the area committee chairperson of Glendale said effective waste management is a key component of rural modernisation, as clean and well-managed environments attract investment, support tourism and enhance the quality of life for residents.
“The bins will complement our ongoing efforts to improve refuse collection and environmental management, this donation strengthens our capacity to deliver services and reinforces the importance of partnerships between local authorities and community organisations.
“The availability of refuse bins is expected to encourage residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices, thereby reducing pollution of water sources and open spaces.”
This initiative further aligns with national policies on environmental protection and climate resilience, which emphasise community involvement and youth-driven solutions in addressing environmental challenges.
Meanwhile, the Youth League said it will continue to roll out similar community-based projects across the district, focusing on environmental stewardship, infrastructure development and empowerment of young people as key drivers of sustainable development.
