Tasiana Shara (40) was convicted on his own plea of guilt when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Ms Gamuchirai Siwardi recently.
Shara was slapped with a two-year jail term but four months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecutor Ms Constance Ngombengombe said Shara was arrested on January 11, after a team of detectives received information that he was in possession of dagga.
Detectives raided his house and he admitted that he brought the dagga from Mozambique where he bought it in exchange for a plough. He led the detectives to an adjacent house where the contraband was hidden. Five 50kg bags were recovered.
Shara told the detectives that he was involved in drug dealing because he could no longer work due to ill health.
Cases of smuggling marijuana into Zimbabwe from neighbouring countries, particularly Mozambique and Malawi where it is grown on a commercial basis, have been on the rise. Zimbabwe is being used as a transit route for drugs to neighbouring countries such as Botswana, South Africa and Zambia.
On many occasions police have arrested suspects in border areas such as Chipinge, Honde Valley, Chimanimani, and Mutare. — CR.
