Mbanje peddlers jailed 4 yrs

TWO brothers, Wedington (25) and Blessing Muchando (22) recently joined the list of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services guests after being convicted of possessing 34kg of mbanje.The siblings were arrested at a police roadblock at Ruwangwe Turn-off following a tip-off made to the police by an anonymous source.

Both men are from Chief Mangwende’s area, Murehwa.
The State, led by Mrs Anesu Tsikwa, said on September 3, police detectives at Ruwangwe Police Station received a tip-off from an informer to the effect that the two had loaded some bags of mbanje in a Harare- bound C.A.G bus.

Police responded by mounting a roadblock at Ruwangwe Turn-off. They searched and recovered two satchels with prepared mbanje belonging to the pair.

Upon further interrogation the two revealed that they had two more sacks on the bus.
The detectives arrested the brothers and recovered the mbanje.
The mbanje was weighed at Nyamaropa ZIMPOST and had a net mass of 33,9kg.

The four-year sentence had one year wholly suspended on condition of good behaviour.
