TWO police officers stationed at Mbare Police Station have been convicted of criminal abuse of duty after being caught soliciting bribes from motorists passing through the station’s main gate.
Naume Dube (31) and Victoria Shonhiwa (36) appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court, where they were found guilty of demanding US$1 from every motorist passing through the police station on 11 March 2024.
The duo was caught red-handed by the Internal Investigations Department, which observed them accepting bribes. Upon their arrest, Dube was found with US$80 in her pockets, while Shonhiwa had US$40.
In a statement on X, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed that the officers were arrested following a tip-off.
“The officers were arrested and handed over to the Police Anti-Corruption Unit. The US$120 and a list of vehicle registration numbers were produced in court as evidence,” read the statement.
The conviction highlights ongoing efforts to crack down on corruption within law enforcement.
