Mbare councillor vows to deliver

ZANU PF Councillor for Ward 3 in Mbare, Cde Simbarashe Chanachimwe, has vowed to complement Government’s efforts in the fight against drug and substance abuse in his ward.

Clr Chanachimwe was arrested early this year for allegedly dealing in drugs but was found not guilty and acquitted.

The youthful councillor has also promised to rehabilitate facilities in Mbare to assist those struggling with drug and substance abuse.

“We want to improve facilities where drug abusers are kept,” he said.

The supply and distribution of drugs like crystal methamphetamine, popularly known as “dombo” or “guka”, is surging amid indications that 60 percent of psychiatric admissions are presently caused by drug abuse.

President Mnangagwa has declared war against drug abuse, and Clr Chanachimwe wants to help in that fight.

The President has created a committee chaired by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.

Clr Chanachimwe said he was also planning to roll out anti-drug abuse campaigns and introduce projects aimed at rescuing young people from lack of employment and drug abuse.

“We aim to introduce a lot of projects for young people, which we hope will help in reducing the scourge of drug and substance abuse,” he said.

Fifty-nine councillors were sworn in on Thursday last week at Town House in Harare, with their first meeting taking place yesterday and they elected the CCC Ward 18 councillor, Ian Makone, as the mayor.

Ward 41 Councillor Kudzai Kadzombe (CCC) is the deputy mayor.
