Zimbabwe’s digital transformation took a significant leap forward on Wednesday following the official opening of the Mbare Computer Information Centre by Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Tatenda Mavetera.
The launch of the computer lab at Matapi Flats is part of the Mbare Renewal Project, aimed at empowering the community through digital literacy.
The lab, situated in a renovated community-built facility, features 14 operational computers, with an additional 30 pledged by Skills, Audit and Development Minister, Professor Paul Mavima.
This initiative is crucial for Mbare, where 65 percent of its residents are youths.
Minister Mavetera said the facility “is not merely equipment but a hub for innovation, learning and empowerment.
“I urge youths to enrol in the Zimbabwe Digital Skills Empowerment Programme targeting 1,5 million trainees in software engineering, programming and data science,” she said.
Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Albert Mavunga, echoed President Mnangagwa’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind.
He explained that the project shows that the Second Republic is forging ahead with the empowerment of the people.
In an interview, project founder Mr Oliver Olembe expressed excitement about the milestone.
“We started this to reclaim Mbare’s glory. Digital literacy enables e-governance, e-medicine and e-commerce, it’s a weapon against idleness and drug abuse,” he said.
Mr Olembe’s team has already secured 14 computers from different organisations. They plan to expand the rollout of labs nationwide through partnerships.
The initiative represents a significant step towards empowering Mbare’s youths and enhancing community engagement with technology, paving the way for a brighter digital future.
